If the original finish has deteriorated beyond conservation, and it is determined that refinishing will not ruin the value of the piece, then a complete restoration, well documented, is in order.

A faithful restoration interprets the original intent of the maker as closely as possible. It is important to retain the furniture's character, which is acquired through the processes of natural aging and use. Part of the value of a piece lies in characteristics like its patina, wear marks, or minor nicks and scratches.
